This furniture set includes a chair, couch, desk, and coffee table. Each piece of furniture is made from CNC routed plywood components that can be shipped flat. The furniture can be assembled by amateurs without the use of nails or glue. Instead, pieces are joined using jigoku-hozo, or “hell joints”, a type of wedge-locked Japanese joinery. The wedges are made from cherry, a hardwood which contrasts with the plywood veneer.

The project began as a renovation of a unit in Kisho Kurokawa’s Metabolist opus, the Nakagin Capsule Tower, which was then listed on Airbnb. The scope of work extended beyond the capsule to a visual identity for the "Save Nakagin Capsule Tower Project," the client’s personal effort to help preserve the building. A set of graphic standards were developed and applied to a range of products. These items were sold to Airbnb guests to help fund the preservation effort.

Though the interior is small, this top-floor apartment has access to two large terraces: one with an outdoor living area, the other a shaded, open-air home office. Modular furniture and a convertible office/bedroom make the most of the limited space.

The Temple Street Garage, a two block long parking deck designed by Paul Rudolph, is a contradictory artifact of the urban renewal era. A landmark structure that expresses the ambitions of Modernism, the garage is also a symbol of the hubris of the design professions. This renovation and expansion of the garage reclaims this space for the city. The updated program includes housing, a hotel, retail, and child care facilities.
New Athenæum

This is a new athenaeum: a type of private library particular to New England. The center of the site is a small open space, an urban room flanked by porticos on each side. A slab tower fronting the north of the space has a bar, dining room, and meeting hall in its lower reaches. The south side is occupied by a small café and lounge. The reading rooms are to the east. The entrance to the library is announced by a copper clad volume. The adjacent Scotia Street and St. Cecilia’s Street are repaved in granite, creating a unified precinct.

This is an unsolicited proposal for the transformation of the Central Park Reservoir. The articulated edges, varied bathymetry, and occupiable archipelagoes of the project respond to both ecological imperatives and recreational desires. The longest axial view down the lake is retained, and the existing shoreline is preserved in key locations near the granite pumphouses, but the design maintains a formal and geometric distance from the 19th century original.
Harbor Film Studio

This film studio, sited on a derelict pier in the Boston Harbor, would be the largest film production facility on the East Coast. The spaces are defined by slab-like service cores. The larger of the slabs contain production suites and lounges. The smaller has cellular dressing rooms, water closets, and mechanical space. Lightweight steel soundstages span in between. Each building can be redeveloped independently, the sound stages demolished and the cores repurposed.

In chess, algebraic notation refers to a representation of the game pieces on a coordinate grid. This allows any scenario in the game to be visualized and discussed without having to arrive at it in the course of normal play. Representations of ideal cities offer an analogous system of notation for architects and planners. Free from the contingencies of real city making, formal elements and arrangements of urban space can be examined in abstraction.

This cohousing community deconstructs the boundaries that separate conventional cohousing complexes from their environments. All existing buildings on the four-block site are maintained. To these are added free-standing common buildings and slender residential point towers. Generous collective spaces are maintained within the block and connected to each other by pedestrian passages.

Campus Master Plan

This master plan for Florida International University re-imagines the development of the campus for the next 100 years. The plan doubles the floor area of the university while halving the total footprint, returning the undeveloped area to the abutting Tamiami Park. The master plan includes an elevated BRT system linked to an aggressive transit oriented up-zoning. Residential blocks are structured to provide flexible disaster relief housing for nearby residents, building on the existing agreement between FIU and the surrounding neighborhoods.
